Carl House Weddings: Lauren Poole and Joshua Golden

Sweet Summer Greetings!  My name is Mona Slovensky; I’m the Event Manager at Carl House.  I love my job and I find my position fulfilling and rewarding. Each wedding is a whirlwind of excitement and adventure that keeps me and the Carl House event staff on our toes for several hours.  The thrill of transforming each wedding and reception into the perfect experience for the bride and groom, their families and friends, and all who are present, gives all of the Carl House event team the adrenaline we need to deal with every challenge that arises.
Mona New
I begin by greeting and helping our event partners feel welcomed and get organized.  There are florists, linen suppliers, cake providers, the photographer, and the DJ to get oriented. These suppliers DO HAVE NEEDS!  I hear questions like, “How do I get the electricity on in the gazebo?”  ”Has the bride arrived?”  What are we going to do if it starts raining?”
Emergencies can erupt at any moment.  Recently, I found myself diving across the ballroom just in time to catch the top layer of a wedding cake in both hands!
While our wedding director monitors the wedding ceremony, I am preparing to welcome our guests into our beautiful ballroom. Once guests have found their tables and are seated, I try to visit each table and welcome them personally to Carl House. I love people and I love hearing what they have to say.  Recently, while visiting one table, a guest commented on Carl House’s delicious signature peach tea and how they wished they had it in their home state of Missouri.   Welcoming, connecting, building rapport, and taking care of needs–that is what I am all about.  Carl House….a gathering place, provides me the setting to do what I do best.
Throughout the event, I work to balance the physical and emotional needs and desires of the clients, the guests, the photographer, and the staff to ensure that everyone has the most wonderful and memorable experience Carl House can provide.
The fabulous wedding of Lauren Poole and Joshua Golden this past weekend was typical of the delightful weddings for which Carl House has become famous.  The sunflower theme was splendidly appropriate for a summer wedding.  Laura was gorgeous in her traditional bridal gown and unique veil edged with delicate pearls.  Bridesmaids in chocolate brown satin dresses surrounded Laura for the garden ceremony.
The bridal party’s table was decorated with sunflowers in tall cylinder vases with flowing brown ribbons and votive candles that flickered and played peek-a-boo between the vases. The three-tiered cake was adorned with more bright sunflowers, and the Carl House glowed with the promise of a blessed event.
The DJ, who also happened to be the groom’s father, kept things lively for this bride and groom.  We understand Laura and Joshua attended UGA and met at the  Ballroom Dance Club, which explains their electrifying and entertaining first dance as Mr. & Mrs Golden.
It makes my night when a guest or member of the bridal party approaches me or one of the staff to say something like “This was the most fun I’ve every had at a wedding!” or “Everything was simply perfect!”  Being able to please Carl House clients this way is what keeps me coming back to manage events until midnight or later every weekend!
Mona

Carl House Weddings: Shayla Watson & Justin Morrow

Filed under: Ceremony, Event Planning, Photography, Receptions — carlhouse @ 10:27 am

In describing Shayla Watson and Justin Morrow’s wedding, Senior Wedding Director Denise Myers had only this to say, “Tonight was as close to perfect as they come!”

From the instant the bubbly bride arrived at Carl House Friday morning, an endearing smile covered her face. With her hair pinned and twisted perfectly in a bun, Shayla was stunning; even when wearing the long sleeve pink polo and matching pattern shorts she arrived in. Shayla’s cheerful demeanor continued into the bridal suite as her bridesmaids helped her slip into her strapless dress, which was delicately accented with crystals and a diamond broach, all the while showing no signs of nerves or apprehension. At the beginning of the ceremony, a confident Shayla gracefully slipped her father’s arm into her own and began to take the first few steps toward her beaming groom.

The weather for the outdoor ceremony paralleled beautifully the mood of the evening; the sun exuded warmth and light while the gentle wind blew with an electricity that was both calming and revitalizing. Family and friends took in the weather and the moment as they watched Shayla and Justin stand hand-in-hand professing their love and commitment to one another. As bride and groom took their first kiss as husband and wife, the audience laughed and clapped in excitement and the breeze picked-up, not skipping a beat, to enjoy in the celebration as well.

The excitement continued throughout the reception as guests enjoyed wonderful food and music all while dancing the night away. After an eventful bouquet and garter toss, the couple quickly said their goodbyes before hopping in a white convertible, making sure to steal one last kiss before speeding away into the night.

Do You Have a Momzilla!

If you are wondering what a Momzilla is exactly, you probably don’t have one.  However, if you have a mom or mother-in-law to be that is a little out of control, you may have Momzilla.  Some brides find themselves living out the wedding fantasy of their moms.  From the dress to the reception, mom has an opinion of how things should be.  While input is usually appreciated, a Momzilla will take over the day and forget the focus is about the bride.

Where it gets tricky is that many times the parents are paying for the wedding and feel that their input trumps the opinions of the happy couple.  The reality is that if they are footing the bill, you may have to put up with some decisions you don’t agree with in the end.

So if your mom is throwing a tantrum when things don’t go her way, politely remind her that it is your day and while you want her to be a part of it, you need to create the wedding of YOUR dreams.

Booking your wedding transportation

As you plan your wedding, you are going to want to think about transportation.  You will need to consider how you and your wedding party will get to and from the wedding and the reception.  Remember that some bridal party members may be flying in from out of town.  If you aren’t planning on renting a limo or other transportation, make sure they have someone they can share a ride with on the day of the wedding.

You may want to consider at least renting a limo or a town car for you and your hubby.  You will be dressed up in the gown of your dreams.  Scrunching into the back of a Honda Civic may not be the fantasy you have dreamt about on your wedding day.

Wedding transportation can be as unique as the bride and groom.  You can opt for a traditional method like a limousine, or go with something a little different like trolley or a party bus.

Sending Thank You Notes

Sending a thank you note is such an important part of being a bride.  Don’t wait until after the wedding to start sending the notes.  Once you get engaged, you will receive weddings up to and past the wedding itself. If you receive a gift, take time and send the thank you note within a few days.  Some etiquette books will say you have up to three months to send a thank you.  I personally think a thank you should be sent within two weeks of receiving a gift.  The exception may be giving your self a little extra time with the honeymoon.  So, unless you are taking a one month honeymoon, you still should be able to send out all the thank you notes within 30 days of your wedding.

The Three Things You Should Know

The Three Things You Should Know  (A simple guide to finding the right photographer for your wedding)

You may have just started your search for the right photographer or you may have been looking for some time now.  Wedding magazines, books and TV programs give advice on what to shop for.  There are hundreds of options for prints, books and albums.  Every photographer is offering something different.  It can be so confusing, there is a way to simplify your search.  Here are the three most important things to consider when looking for a wedding photographer.  Please apply these criteria to any photographer you may interview.

The Images

Look at the images.  Can you see yourself in them and being photographed that way?  Do they speak to your heart?  If you look at them, and understand how the Bride and Groom felt at that moment, then you have found what you were looking for.  You don’t have to be an art critic to know what you like.

The Photographer

Your photographer will be spending a large amount of time with you on your wedding day.  That said, personality is a big factor in selecting a photographer.  Would you enjoy somebody funny? Serious?  Could you be with them all day?  Do they make you feel confident and secure?  What is their experience?  Does it seem as if they are well organized?  Do they plan ahead and have backup equipment?  They should also be a legitimate business with a license and business insurance.  Any professional photographer should have no problem answering these last questions.

The Price

This is the last thing to consider. Granted, everyone has a budget.  Still, I have never seen anyone regret spending the money for something they really LOVED.  Keep in mind, wedding photography is an art form, and if done correctly, your wedding album or book will be a unique piece of art that you and your photographer have created together.  Sometimes a wedding book or album is the first original art a couple owns.

Overall it is a balance between the above criteria, and what you can afford.  But, if you LOVE the images, and the photographer is THE ONE and they have a way to make it possible to commission them, then you are there!

Happy Bride

Trash The Dress

Filed under: A Rachel Reeves BLOG, Photography, Wedding Dresses — Rachel Reeves - BrideAndGroomPlanner.com @ 4:47 pm

After spending months and months searching for the perfect dress, believe it or not, many brides are opting to trash it.  Brides are being much more creative with their photography.  Having a photo sitting after the wedding could lead to some unique locations and wedding photos.  In order to get those shots, some dresses may not be in the same pristine condition they were in prior to these wedding photos.  Beach brides are getting wet, by taking action shots in the water.  City brides have been known to jump into fountains.  There is nothing these brides won’t do to capture a unique and fun moment on film.

The Importance of Good Audio

Filed under: Event Planning, Music & Entertainment, Photography, Receptions, Videography — Atlanta Wedding Productions - atlwed.com @ 11:35 am

A wide-shot of the church on a beautiful afternoon. A close-up of a tear on the bride’s face during her vows. Video has the timeless ability to invoke emotion and allow a couple to experience all of the joy and excitement of their wedding day. However, one often overlooked (but very important) aspect that helps to re-create these emotions is the sound of the big day. So what should a couple look for when it comes to good audio?

First, make sure that the videographer is using high-quality broadcast mics. Broadcast-quality mics are field tested to withstand daily use and should allow the operator to adjust wireless channels to meet the needs of the venue. In other words, if your church also uses wireless mics (as most do), having a professional quality adjustable mic allows the operator to avoid these channels already in use and ensure crystal clear sound.

Second, have multiple mics. There is simply no way to get great audio of a couple’s vows using a camera-mounted mic from 100 feet away. Make sure that the videographer is using at least one wireless ‘lav’ mic on the groom or officiant to pick up vows and a second camera-mounted mic to pick up surrounding audio such as music.

Some videographers will also use separate, portable audio recorders to capture musicians, speakers and other important audio. These portable recorders are very small and can be hidden very close to the subject while still remaining discrete. Videographers may also use these recorders to ‘plug in’ to the church or venue’s sound system for very clear audio.

Finally, ask your venue contact or coordinator what restrictions you may have when it comes to audio. Some venues do not allow the use of wireless mics. It is important to ask these questions up-front and let your videographer know as soon as possible that other alternatives need to be explored. Spend a few minutes talking to your potential vendors about their experience when it comes to capturing audio. Good audio from your live event will definitely add more depth and emotion to your final wedding production.

Taking Pictures - Finding The Right Time

Filed under: A Rachel Reeves BLOG, Photography — Rachel Reeves - BrideAndGroomPlanner.com @ 12:00 pm

Wedding photos are an important part of the wedding day activities.  Many brides and grooms meet with photographers several weeks or months prior to the wedding to decide on schedules and poses.  Photographers today can usually take many photos without too much interruption in day.  However, there are still decisions to be made on when you take those posed shots.

Many brides and grooms opt to see each other prior to the ceremony in order to keep photos after the ceremony to a minimum.  Taking photos after the ceremony can sometimes be very time consuming and could potentially leave guests waiting for you arrival at the reception.  If you choose this option, be sure to have light appetizers, drinks and even some entertainment available for guests until you arrive.

If you do opt to see your future hubby before the ceremony, there are many ways to still make it a romantic moment.  Some couples choose to meet privately in a room alone.  Typically the bride will walk into a room where the groom is waiting.  This gives the element of surprise for him seeing you in  your dress for the first time.
