Playing Dress Up

Filed under: A Rachel Reeves BLOG, Ceremony, Tuxedos and Formal Wear, Wedding Dresses — Rachel Reeves - BrideAndGroomPlanner.com @ 8:14 am

I recently watched a new bridal show that is about the search for a bridal gown from the boutique’s point of view.  I personally sold wedding gowns for several years, so I could relate to much of what they said.  It’s an interesting perspective listening to the comments of the sales people.

When a bride starts dress shopping, it can be along drawn out experience.  I would encourage brides to try on several gowns and visit several stores.  However, remember that these stores are running a business and these sales people are typically on commission.  That doesn’t mean that you should ever feel pressured into buying a dress or you should feel guilty for ‘just looking’.

Just consider some common sense when shopping.  Maybe you decide that you want to try on top designer dresses, even though they aren’t even close to your budget.  I mean, when are you going to have the chance again to try on these beautiful gowns???  Go ahead and go to the fancy salon and try on a few designer gowns.  Just don’t waste too much of their time.  Have a little fun, but be respectful that this is also someone’s job.

Booking your wedding transportation

As you plan your wedding, you are going to want to think about transportation.  You will need to consider how you and your wedding party will get to and from the wedding and the reception.  Remember that some bridal party members may be flying in from out of town.  If you aren’t planning on renting a limo or other transportation, make sure they have someone they can share a ride with on the day of the wedding.

You may want to consider at least renting a limo or a town car for you and your hubby.  You will be dressed up in the gown of your dreams.  Scrunching into the back of a Honda Civic may not be the fantasy you have dreamt about on your wedding day.

Wedding transportation can be as unique as the bride and groom.  You can opt for a traditional method like a limousine, or go with something a little different like trolley or a party bus.

Sending Thank You Notes

Sending a thank you note is such an important part of being a bride.  Don’t wait until after the wedding to start sending the notes.  Once you get engaged, you will receive weddings up to and past the wedding itself. If you receive a gift, take time and send the thank you note within a few days.  Some etiquette books will say you have up to three months to send a thank you.  I personally think a thank you should be sent within two weeks of receiving a gift.  The exception may be giving your self a little extra time with the honeymoon.  So, unless you are taking a one month honeymoon, you still should be able to send out all the thank you notes within 30 days of your wedding.

Brown is the new Black

Filed under: A Rachel Reeves BLOG, Tuxedos and Formal Wear — Rachel Reeves - BrideAndGroomPlanner.com @ 7:06 am

A big trend in Tuxedo’s is Brown. Well, at least that is what the fashion mags are saying. So, instead of the traditional black, many grooms are opting for a chocolate brown. I have yet to see this at any weddings I’ve attended lately, but I am wondering if this in fact something your grooms are considering.

While the thought is somewhat intriguing, I fear that we could be venturing back into the 1070’s. Are we on our way to bringing back the powdered blue tux with a ruffled shirt? Yes, a chocolate brown tux is a far cry from the pastels of the 70’s. Let’s see if this trends leaves Hollywood and makes it to the rest of country!

Tuxedo Styles - New Trends

The Chocolate Brown Tux. I hope the trend passes soon. Black is classic. Let the woman wear the color. The only thing a chocolate colored tux is good for is hiding the spots from dripings from the chocolate fountain.

Tips on finding your perfect Wedding Gown (from someone who DOESN’T sell them!)

Filed under: Tuxedos and Formal Wear, Wedding Dresses — pbdempsey @ 7:03 pm

We’ve had experience with hundreds and hundreds of wedding gowns over the years. The advice we are about to give you is WORTH reading. Of course our ultimate goal for your wedding day is for you to look your absolute, most gorgeous, best. This advice might just help you do that and save you some headaches along the way!

TIP #1

Wedding gowns are expensive. A bridal salon’s job is to SELL you a gown and make as much money as they can. Educate yourself. Check the fiber content on the gowns you are interested in. Synthetic gowns are much less expensive than silk gowns, and many synthetics today look absolutely lovely. Of course, if only silk will do, make sure it is 100% silk; not a blend! You will generally pay the same price for a solid silk gown and a blended silk gown. Get your money’s worth! Also, blended silk gowns do not clean up very well because the silk fibers and the blended fibers react differently to stains and cleaning chemicals.

TIP #2

Stay away from gowns made with acetate. Acetate stretches, shrinks and is very difficult to get stains out of. Twin City Cleaners sees a lot of bridesmaids gowns made with acetate that say “Professionally Spot Clean Only”. It is extremely difficult to spot clean acetate without leaving a ring on the fabric. We are successful with most, but it’s not easy!

TIP #3

Many bridal salons use in house resources for alterations and pressing. To pay for this they want to sell you a package deal that may include these services with the cost of your gown. None of these additional services are free. Make sure that you are not overpaying and that you are comfortable with their expertise. If you feel that you might be overpaying, ask for a discounted rate on your gown that would exclude those services. Then check outside resources that you are comfortable with.

TIP #4

Consider wearing your mother’s or grandmothers gown. Now wait a minute….I know….you don’t want lace up to your ears and down to your fingertips! You should know that if the gown just isn’t your style, consider having it restyled to make it your own! We’ve done several, and would be delighted to talk to you about the possibilities! We also restore vintage gowns back to their original color.

We hope these tips are helpful to you in searching for your perfect gown! If we can help you please give us a call.
