Why Not SILK?

Real flowers are the traditional route. The scent of a rose or lilac and how they fill a room draw many people to using real flowers. Scents are tied to emotions, and as a wedding is one of the most emotion-filled events a person can ever experience, the emotional factor is another selling point. The delicate beauty real flowers possess is usually the main reason many people choose real over silk. Real flowers do have their drawbacks. Real flowers fade and wilt away after a few days. For the more sentimental brides, who wish to keep their bouquet, this factor may push them to consider silk flowers.

SILK although not as traditional of a choice as real, they are becoming more popular. Today, there are many realistic looking silks out there. They are less expensive and you don’t have to worry you can’t have your favorite exotic flower because it’s not the right season. You also save money on preservation.

Wedding Blog Was Spammed - We Apologize

The Big Wedding Blog was briefly infiltrated by some very crude and offensive pornography.

Evidently our comment filters were somehow overridden.

To prevent this in the future we have put a total administrative review/block on all comments. ALL comments, as well as postings will be reviewed directly by Blog Admin from this point on. We will not depend on spam filters at all.

We apologize to all who received any inappropirate and offensive material. We feel confident that there were no viruses spread during this infiltration of pornography.

With these new admin proceedures now in place, our industry (merchants and brides) can again confidently and securely depend on The Big Wedding Blog. The BIG Wedding Blog remains committed to being the most widely read and distributed source of information for today’s bride.

Please accept our apologies, e-mail any comments directly to blogAdmin@brideandgroomplanner.com

Is it cheaper to get a dummy cake for display, than a real wedding cake?

Many wedding magazines tell you today that it’s cheaper to get a dummy cake for display and then sheet cakes to feed people. Or they say to get a smaller wedding cake and then sheet cakes to make up the servings. Many wedding cake designers don’t agree with this for a number of reasons.

There are businesses out there who make up styrofoam cakes and rent them out over and over. I hate to think about what that cake looks like the 2nd or 3rd time that it’s used. Plus that means you and 50 other brides will have the same cake.

There are also dummy cakes that have a wedge cut out and a real piece of cake is inserted for the cake-cutting photo. I’m not aware of how to sanitize a styrofoam cake that’s going to be rented out over and over again, and I personally would be very nervous about feeding my new spouse some cake that was shoved into a slot that’s had heaven-knows-what in there, used by how-many-people and not properly sanitized.

The magazines, news shows and websites lead a bride to believe styrofoam cakes are practically free. Here’s the truth:
—I still have to buy the styrofoam.
—It takes the same amount of icing to ice a fake cake as it does a real cake.
—It takes the same amount of time to ice a fake cake as it does a real cake.
—Fake cakes take up the same amount of space in the delivery van as a real cake does.
—Fake cakes take the same amount of gas in that van to deliver it as a real cake does.

Because my costs are not diminished by that much, many cake designers charge almost the same amount for a fake cake as a real cake. ASSUMING sheet cakes are cheaper (which is not always true because it’s the same cake, same icing, same delivery costs, etc.), you are most likely to spend MORE on a small fake cake with sheets, than you would on a grand and glamorous wedding cake.

Many magazines also tell you to get a smaller wedding cake and then get sheet cakes to make up the difference. For many bakers sheet cakes are not much cheaper than a wedding cake. It takes the same amount of batter and icing to make a sheet cake as a wedding cake. Also when people say sheet cake it’s one layer of cake with icing on it, many wedding cakes are torted and filled. How do you decide which guest gets a piece of the beautiful wedding cake and which guest get a piece of sheet cake? It’s like trying to decide which guest gets the lobster tail and which guest get the cube steak.

So in the end you might save a few dollars but not as much money as many people would like to believe.

When Should You Cut the Cake?

Filed under: Event Planning, Flowers (wedding), Receptions, Wedding Cakes — Editor - The Big Wedding Blog @ 11:14 am

I attended a recent wedding where the bride and groom proceeded to “cut the cake” and then “throw the bouquet & garder” immediately upon arriving at their reception and before the dinner was served.

Is this a new trend? Is this now the preferred schedule of events for the reception?

Brides and Wedding Professionals, Please add your thoughts.

Does the Wedding Cake need to “Taste Good”?

Filed under: Catering and Culinary, Wedding Cakes — Editor - The Big Wedding Blog @ 1:48 pm

I have always wondered why it seem to be most important to a bride that the wedding cake tastes good. For years I’ve always thought that the way the cake was decorated was most important. I thought the visual aspect was what it was all about, but I think I’m wrong.

My original belief was supported by the many episodes on the Food Channel that feature wedding cake design contests. I’ve never seen a Food Network contest where the winner is selected based upon taste. It’s not even mentioned.

Wedding Cake vendors at bridal shows are always touting the ‘taste’ and ‘freshness’ of their cakes. They don’t seem to make it a presentation of artistic display. This is completely opposite of what they feature on the Food Network.

So, which is it? Brides and Vendors please help me out. Is it Taste or Design? And please tell my WHY??

Then, if it is ‘taste’ that is Sooooo important, then why doesn’t the Food Channel have wedding cake ‘tasting” throw downs?

If you want to see lots of pictures of cakes, go to http://www.brideandgroomplanner.com/cakes.php. You can get lots of ideas for beautiful cake designs. Sorry, you won’t be able to “taste” them. We’re working on internet tasting interactivity, but it’s not perfected yet.

Brides I am so impressed in the quality of Vendors we bring into the industry, keep doing those surveys. http://brideandgroomplanner.com/myWeddingSurvey.php

My favorite part of our planner and Website is the Your Future section, we take pride and staying with you after your special day, don’t overlook this section, we are growing and have recently signed on a couple of Realtors and a Financial Planner. I spent an hour with our financial planner last week and he educated me more in that hour than I have ever been in my 39 years. What better gift could your parents or you give to yourselves than a free financial consultation to start your marriage off right and avoid one of the biggest potholes you could get into.

On the lighter side have you checked out our wedding disaster videos? http://www.brideandgroomplanner.com/stopWeddingDisasters.php  Share them with you friends and family?
